Trump Opens Reelection Bid In Waco To Demonstrate Faith In Federal Government

The Filing

WACO, Texas. Selecting a venue long associated with a deadly 1993 standoff between civilians and federal agents, former President Donald J. Trump on Saturday launched the first rally of his 2024 campaign here, a choice his team described as having nothing whatsoever to do with the city's enduring reputation as a rallying cry for armed distrust of the United States government.

Trump took the stage at Waco Regional Airport before thousands of supporters, opening the event with a recording titled "Justice for All," in which a choir of men imprisoned for their roles in the January 6 attack on the Capitol sing the national anthem while the former president recites the Pledge of Allegiance over the track. Aides confirmed that the production, which paired incarcerated Trump supporters with the candidate now promising to free them, was intended to send a message of national unity.

"Either the deep state destroys America or we destroy the deep state," Trump told the crowd during a speech that ran nearly 90 minutes, in remarks campaign officials characterized as a routine policy address. He went on to assure the January 6 defendants that "you will be vindicated and proud," and that the prosecutors examining his conduct would be "defeated, discredited and totally disgraced."

"I am your warrior, I am your justice," Trump said, before describing the coming election as "the final battle." Sources within the campaign clarified that the candidate was not summoning conflict but merely previewing a governing agenda they said was centered on stability, calm, and a return to normal order.

The location, scheduled in the weeks surrounding the 30th anniversary of the federal siege that left dozens dead, allowed Trump to reach voters worried about government overreach without the distraction of acknowledging that he had himself run the government and was seeking to run it again. Attendees waved flags, purchased merchandise, and expressed enthusiasm for a candidate who has placed opposition to federal authority at the center of a campaign to lead the federal authority.

At press time, Trump had reminded the assembled crowd that the men singing the anthem behind him were patriots, victims, and a valued part of his plans for a second term.
