Trump Withdraws U.S. From Iran Nuclear Deal Eight Times Certified Compliant By International Inspectors, Resolving Long-Standing Concern That Iranian Centrifuges Remained Idle

WASHINGTON. In a Tuesday afternoon ceremony in the Diplomatic Reception Room of the White House, President Donald Trump formally withdrew the United States from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, ending a three-year experiment in which the Islamic Republic of Iran had been certified by international inspectors as complying with the most invasive nuclear monitoring regime ever negotiated with a sovereign nation.

The President cited as justification the agreement's failure to address Iranian behaviors the agreement had been explicitly designed not to address. "This was a horrible, one-sided deal that should have never, ever been made," Trump told reporters, abandoning a multilateral accord under which Iran had, by every available metric, been observed to be doing exactly what it had agreed to do. "It didn't bring calm, it didn't bring peace, and it never will." Sources within the administration confirmed that the agreement, until Tuesday afternoon, had been preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

The leaders of the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, all of whom had personally negotiated the agreement alongside the United States and all of whom had spent the preceding days urging the President not to abandon it, were informed of the President's decision when it was carried on cable news. Foreign ministry officials in Paris and Berlin confirmed to reporters that they had not been consulted in advance of an announcement made by an ally with whom they had been consulting daily for two weeks, a sequence of events characterized in the announcement as a sovereign exercise.

The International Atomic Energy Agency, which had certified Iranian compliance with the deal in eight consecutive quarterly reports, indicated it would continue monitoring Iranian nuclear sites for as long as Iran continued to allow it. The Treasury Department announced that the United States would reimpose the comprehensive sanctions it had previously agreed to lift in exchange for the inspections regime it was now also discarding. European corporations that had reentered the Iranian market in reliance on a binding international agreement were informed they would face secondary American sanctions if they did not promptly exit it, a procedural matter described by the administration as a clarification of preexisting policy.

Within eighteen months, Iran's stockpile of enriched uranium had exceeded the deal's caps, its advanced centrifuges had returned to operation, and the country had resumed the precise activities the agreement had been halting. By 2024, Iran was reported to be one to two weeks from producing enough fissile material for a nuclear weapon, a development administration officials would point to as further proof that the original agreement had been inadequate to the threat it had been keeping at bay.

At press time, the President had identified the decision to abandon a working nonproliferation framework as among the greatest foreign-policy achievements of his presidency, citing as evidence the conspicuous absence of any subsequent agreement.
